The use of italics is either a design choice or an editorial choice. When it comes to design, italics usually will show up in headings as part of the font and type decision. In editing, we use italics for the following (non-exhaustive list):

• Titles of published, artistic or academic works and names of publications
• Names of ships or crafts
• Some non-English words like et al (usually only the ones that haven't entered the common everyday vernacular)
• For emphasis
